| Sauvignon Blanc of Malta. |
Some people are at a loss on what wine to order with fish, seafood and seashell cuisine. It is normally the norm, although there is no hard and fast rule about this, that white wine is to be consumed with this delicate food. I am hereby suggesting several types and styles of white wines produced from grapes harvested in Malta and Gozo for you to try out when you have your next fish or seafood dinner either at home or in a restaurant. These wines offer good value for money. Local white wines are produced to be consumed young. Therefore make sure that the date on the label (which is the vintage year when the grapes were harvested) does not exceed two years. Three years at the most for the premium white wines. As far as I am concerned I always order and accept the previous year's vintage, e.g at present the 2010 vintage for white wine.
Grapes grown and harvested in Malta and Gozo range from Chardonnay; Sauvignon Blanc; Vermentino; Viogner; and the local indegenious Girgentina. Experiments with other varieties spring up from time to time, but these are the better choices.
