L’Agape Restaurant, Rabat, Malta.

DINNER AT L'AGAPE RESTAURANT - 19TH MAY,2012.  During the passage of time, reviewing wines and restaurants, I have come across various categories and styles of establishments at which one can either go simply to have a bite to eat, or better still to dine in style. Some venues are found to leave a lot to be desired, others are considered average, others good or very good; but it is always a very pleasant surprise to discover a new place, which does not project any  grandiose or pretentious illusions about itself, but then one finds that it is an excellent establishment, offering high quality cuisine, excellent service as well as reasonable value for money.  Such a discovery was L'Agape Restaurant in Rabat, yesterday for dinner. L'Agape is not a large restaurant,  in fact it is quite small with downstairs and upstairs seating,  and caters only for just about 35 to 40 guests at any one time. The upstairs dining area may be used for...

Dinner at Chapter One Restaurant, Paceville, St. Julians, on Friday, 1oth August,2012.  Chapter One Restaurant is one of those rare gems that are discovered by chance especially in locations such as central Paceville, and the St. Julians area, which locations are teaming with eateries of all genres.  Situated in Church Street, just a few meters down from the Millenium Chapel, the restaurant's  name Chapter One with the caption underneath stating  "where passion and genuineness come together" caught my eye, and decided to find out if this was an just an idle boast, or whether the establishment means it. Passion and genuineness are strong words, which demand to be challenged; we were not disappointed.  Chapter One opened its doors just over two years ago in 2010 by Chef/Patron  Hiram Cassar, after having completed his training and studies at ITS,  followed by stints in various restaurants and hotels in Malta, and after having obtai...

Dinner at The Villa, St. Julians on Tuesday, 27th November, 2012.  Nicely executed dishes, with quality and fresh ingredients. Four persons in group, each ordering different dishes to test the versatility of the Chefs. We were not disappointed as each dish was well prepared and presented with very good cuisine.   Average price for the dinner (4 persons) as shown in the following photos was  Eur45 per person, which included one bottle of Beoujolais Nouveau 2012, two bottles of water and espressos, plus complimentary Meridiana liqueurs.    Good value and very good, attentive service, with quality cuisine and presentations. Fine dining in a casual atmosphere.         Starters: Pappardelle with Chorizo Sausages; Rabbit Livers; Fresh Tomato and mussels soup; Raviolacci di Carciofo.     Main Courses: Grilled Irish Beef  Rib-eye; Pan-frid Quail;  Chicken S...

Family Sunday Lunch at the Oceana Restaurant, Hilton Malta - November, 2012. There is no doubt about it that one of our favourite, Sunday lunch haunts, especially once the new buffet season starts in earnest every October, is The Oceana at the Hilton Malta, and by the end of the season, sometime at the beginning of June, we would have visited this venue several times, apart from the odd special occasion lunch as on Mothers Day, Easter, Christmas or New Year's Day lunch, which we also like to spread, to other selected establishments as well. The Oceana, under the direction of the Hilton Malta's Executive Chef Joe Vella's direction has always, year after year after year, proved to be the model of consistency in top quality, offering diverse cuisine stations which might also be themed (Italian, German, Asian etc). The Oceana is located on the same floor area as the pools and garden, with clear views through the large, glass panes,  ...

Tartarun Restaurant at Marsaxlokk.

Reviewed on two occasions in July and November, 2012. Re-Reviewed in March, 2013. Tartarun is a "WRMC Silver Spoon Restaurant".   Dinners at Tartarun, Restaurant, Lounge & Wine bar.   The history of the present Tartarun Restaurant in Marsaxlokk goes back a long way. It was originally opened and run by the Schiavone family as Harbour Lights Restaurant (circa 1980's/1990's) and it was one of the first, main three typically fish and seafood restaurants in this locality. The others were at that time the old version of Ir-Rizzu Restaurant (since then enlarged and commercialized beyond its original concept), and the old Skuna Restaurant (long gone and closed).   In recent years Marsaxlokk has become a mecca for fish restaurants, resulting in everyone that owned a house on Triq Is-Sajjieda wanted, or want, to open a restaurant. Harbour Lights continued to operate under this name until some three years ...
