Description:

“Viña Real Gran Reserva has been one of the great classics of Rioja Alavesa (and indeed Spain) for several decades”

“Viña Real Reserva wines stand out for having the unmistakable stamp of the unique Rioja Alavesa terroir”

“Viña Real Crianza is a classic Rioja Alavesa wine. Gastronomic, enjoyable and fresh with a long finish

Viña Real Wines – Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva, are produced mainly from grapes from Rioja Alavesa vineyards. The grapes come primarily from the towns of Laguardia and Elciego. Neighbouring municipalities have been involved in the production of this wine for several decades. The plots are small and sometimes terraced, featuring over 30-year old head-trained and un-irrigated vines. The soils are mostly calcareous, poor in organic matter, with smaller yields and varying aspects. These conditions force the vine roots to search deep for rare nutrients that give these wines their unique flavours and aromas.

Following pre-fermentation cold maceration, alcoholic fermentation takes place in gravity-fed (with a bridge crane) stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28-30ºC.

During fermentation, remontage and delestage are carried out, with tastings to determine the ideal time for running off (also gravity led) into concrete tanks.

The wine is aged in accordance with the Rioja rules for each wine category and class, in new single-use French and American oak barrels for an average of 14 month for the Crianza;  22 months for the Reserva and 24 months for the Gran Reserva,  with manual racking taking place every 4 months in the first year. Once bottled, the wine is aged in the Viña Real cellars for for over the required minimum number of years from twelve months to 36 months respectively for each particular category to develop a rounded and complex flavour before being released onto the market.

Tempranillo blend Tasting Notes:

Taste: These wines are ruby-red in colour with varying hues. Very intense and complex on the nose highlighting notes from the barrel aging of coffee, spices, , ripe red fruits, black fruits and dried fruits. Smooth in the mouth evolving in structured and long lasting finish with a smooth acidity that give these wines freshness. Integrated smooth and sweet tannins are noticeable in all of these three wines.
