Dinner at San Andrea Restaurant - Palazzo Castelletti , Rabat, Malta. Friday, 2nd May, 2014.  It is a fact that when one steps inside Palazzo Castelletti, one becomes part of the long and great legacy that is Maltese history. This noble building, built in the 17th century, bears witness to 2,000 years of turbulent, often dangerous  times that shaped the fate of this island.   Palazzo Castelletti has recently been restored and renovated to its former splendour, and it can be stated that it has passed from housing nobility to being used as a school and shelter for children during World War II as well as briefly being the residence of a holy woman, the venerable Adeodata Pisani, to what it is today. It was recently discovered that the building rests on the remains of an ancient Roman village that were unearthed and are open to viewing by the public. The rooms of Palazzo Castelletti,  share their long history and we...

Commando Restaurant, Mellieha.

April 26, 2014

Dinner at Commando Restaurant, Mellieha, Friday, 25th April, 2014. Although the Commando Bar and Coffee shop has been in existence since World War II, the fully refurbished and totally modernised, Commando Restaurant was opened by Chef-Padron Damian Ciappara,  some sixteen months ago as a gourmet establishment offering a select, short  menu utilising the freshest ingredients in season. In the short time that this venue has been in operation, Damian and his team have succeeded to establish it as a destination restaurant, to which discerning diners would travel for miles without regret, to sample the day's offerings , and  which is offering real competition to longer established, up-market restaurant s in this location.  On arrival at the restaurant, we were greeted by a young and pleasant waiter and we were seated at our reserved table, which was a very pleasantly set-up,  round table with chairs and a rounded wall-settee in the...

Round-Up of some top restaurants visited for lunch or dinner during January and February, 2014. Dinner at Venus Restaurant - Friday, 21st Feb.,2014. Old haunts and favourite restaurants are like magnets, they always have that certain pull on you which makes you want to go and sample their food again and again. Venus Restaurant in Bugibba is most probably our favourite restaurant in Bugibba - good food, good service, good value for money, and co-owned and run by Michael Gera as front-of-house and Mark Briffa Chef-patron, both of whom are passionate about what they do as restaurateurs. Visited for the first time this year, on Friday, 21st February, for dinner with friends, with food selections as shown in the following photographs, taken of each presentation as served, and which tell their own story. Price for the dinner as shown excluding wine, but including water and coffees: EUR152 (EUR38 per person between four persons)...

TemptAsian Restaurant at The Palace Hotel.

December 17, 2013

TemptAsian - Asian Fusion Restaurant at The Palace Hotel, Sliema, Malta. Dinner on Saturday,  14th December, 2013. It goes without saying that the hallmark of every luxurious hotel are its restaurants. Breakfast restaurants, lunch and dinner restaurants to cater for the majority of guests are normal and a necessity, but what really separates the serious players from the ordinary, is a spectacular, up-scale restaurant, through which the hotel in question will be able to showcase its culinary expertise. Such restaurants become destination venues for the more discerning diner. Such a restaurant is TEMPTASIAN - Asian Fusion Restaurant, which has gone a step further through its chic layout and set-up, private curtained-in dining tables, lounges, and tables overlooking the spectacular, panoramic  views of Sliema and Grand Harbour, from the 9th floor of The Palace Hotel. TemptAsian has from the beginning of December, started to int...

Ristorante La Vela, Pieta, Malta.

December 16, 2013

Dinner at Ristorante La Vela, Pieta/Msida, on Friday, 13th December, 2013.  Ristorante La Vela, situated as it is in the Pieta Yacht Marina garden, is a hidden gem of a restaurant, specializing in Italian cuisine, naturally prepared and cooked by a young Italian chef. The restaurant is a typical Italian style, small restaurant, seating about thirty diners at any one time, so table reservations are essential as this establishment has a very good following of discerning clientele. Parking is no problem, in the yacht marina garden , with the location quiet and peaceful, especially for dinner. The restaurant offers  excellent choices of fresh fish sourced in daily, seafood, and prime meats, with menu selections listed under: Antipasti; I Primi; I Secondi; I dolici della Casa.   Food Selections: Our food selections had to center around a selection of the seafood antipasti, fish and beef steaks; and our selections from ...

Harruba Restaurant at the InterContinental Malta.

December 3, 2013

Harruba Restaurant at the InterContinental Hotel St. Julians. Sunday buffet lunch on Sunday, 1st December, 2013.   It has been a while since we reviewed this restaurant, and going by the amazing success that the InterContinental's young team of chefs have achieved in the recent Malta Kulinarja competitions, it was about time that we gave this establishment another visit for their Sunday buffet lunch. The buffet lunch at Harruba was a late starter this year, having opened its doors on the 20th of October, rather than the more traditional  first Sunday  of that month.  The culinary team have concentrated in presenting selections of gourmet style cuisine that would please the more discerning diner rather than the traditional buffet seeker in Malta. With choices of various pate's, foie gras en terrine,  different terrines, amuse-bouche presentations on a central table with selections of the best amuse-bouche preparations...
