Round-Up of restaurants visited in October, 2014 Lunch at Cardini Pizza, Pasta, Grill Restaurant, Sliema. Wednesday, 1st October, 2014. Cardini Restaurant on Tower Road, Sliema, has for some time been one of our favourite restaurants when we happen to be in the area. We've been a number of times for lunch, which is a quieter time weekdays than during the weekend, but the place is normally quite well attended in the evenings. The menu gives a range of pizza which are very large; good portions of pasta dishes which can be taken as starters or main courses; antipasti; grill; and fresh fish which is delivered daily. Portions are normally very large, with massive side servings of freshly fried chips; roast potatoes, vegetables in season and fresh salad with all main courses of fish and/or meat, all included in the menu price of the main. A daily specials menu is also made available with whatever is found fresh on the day...

Ali Baba Lebanese Restaurant – Gzira.

Dinner at Ali Baba Restaurant, Gzira Wednesday, 15th October, 2014. Ethnic restaurant such as Chinese, Indian, Thai, Japanese, various other combined Asian,  Moroccan and other Arabic cuisine restaurants, etc., have always been operated in Malta under one form or another, as happens always, most simply cater for local tastes rather than projecting the authentic, ethnic cuisine, with choice of the freshest ingredients  which depict the mother country, and which would, for a couple of hours transport the diner to that far away place through the authenticity of the cuisine, its flavours and taste. We were very pleasantly surprised last Wednesday, when we paid a visit to Ali Baba Restaurant in Ponsonby Street, Sliema.  This restaurant has been serving  genuine Lebanese food for over twenty-five years, having been  originally opened by Abdul Rahman Harb back in 1987, serving traditional couscous and other Lebanese staples, prepared...

A Wine Professional’s Notes

September 29, 2014

A Wine Professional's Notes - It is easy to become a wine professional with a bit of study. By: Reno Spiteri, BBA., CCTP., ACWP., Dip.Marketing    It is not the first time, that I happen to be entertaining guests at a restaurant, or giving advice to someone about wine selections for a private occasion, and even sometimes when one happens to strike a conversation with a restaurateur, or even overhears someone ordering a wine, that as far as they know wine falls just under two categories. It's either Red or White (or in more incongruous and daft situations, someone might also add another category - Rose D'Anjou - yes that's correct not just Rose', but you read well, Rose D'Anjou!). One has to sympathize with such a mentality or lack of knowledge, because the subject of wine is a vast and intricate one, but also one that has its rewards in the enjoyment of this exquisite beverage, especially if one knows what he is on abou...

Viticulture Notes

September 22, 2014

Viticulture Notes by Reno Spiteri, BBA (Mngt).,Dip. Mrkt., ACWP It is a sacrosanct  fact, that is advocated by most wine professionals that high quality wine can only be produced from high quality fruit. This means that great wines and top quality wines are made in the vineyard, in fact 80 per cent of quality winemaking happens in the vineyard. There are a host of factors, both in the vineyard as well as in the winery that can affect the final product as it goes through the various procedures and is finally bottled and sealed. Even so, some top quality wines require further aging in the bottle, in some cases even for years rather than months, in adequate and temperature controlled cellars before they are released for sale to the consumer.   Many believe that the whole character of wine can be achieved in the winery, through modern equipment and new techniques, or through age-old traditional winemaking practices. Others incl...

August was a busy month for us, as apart from the five restaurants that we visited, (one of them twice) in Gozo, between the 15th and 18th of August, we had also visited and favourably reviewed another seven restaurants. Short reviews of these restaurants with photographs have already been published in our Facebook Group, but a concise,  full round-up, of these seven restaurants shall be given here as well. Dinner at Al Molo Restaurant - Portomaso Marina. Friday, 1st August, 2014. A wonderful five course degustation menu prepared by Chef Andrew Pace was enjoyed last Friday. Very select, small portions of flavourful delicacies, masterfully prepared there and then by the chef, who also selected the wine to pair with his creations. This is the type of food that has to be appreciated for its delicate flavours and preparation, and not for its quantity.  Food served in separate servings: Aged speck with  Roquefort cheese c...

A gourmet week-end in Gozo over the Santa Maria public holiday. A pleasant weekend in Gozo between August 15 and 18, both days included, which visit was augmented by a bit of sightseeing, plenty of swimming and of course visits for lunch and dinner at some very good and well selected restaurants all of which we had been to before, tried and tested and to which we return time and time again when we visit Gozo. We have been to Gozo some weeks ago, during which stay we had reviewed a further selection of our sister island's top restaurants, that have been also reviewed here. Day one -  Friday, 15th August, 2014:  Lunch at Chez Amand at Qbajjar, Marsalforn -  Friday 15th August, 2014. Chez Amand is one of our casual, yet very good dining haunts in Gozo, and as we were staying just opposite, our first lunch visit was naturally this place. Run by Chef Amand Veranneman and his daughter Caroline who  runs front-of house admirab...

The Gazebo Restaurant & Merkanti Bistro at the Hilton Malta.  Gazebo Restaurant   Situated under fairy lit olive trees by the pool, offering the expansive sea views, this restaurant has always been a top favourite with us for al fresco Summer dining, and apart from excellent cuisine freshly cooked to one's liking, the ambience and atmosphere of the place is fantastic and can be enjoyed by groups, families, and couples for special occasions, casual summer dining, as well as it is impeccable for the quintessence of a romantic summer’s eve in the Mediterranean, below the long summer star-filled night sky and balmy summer evenings.
