January 25, 2022

WRMC 2022 -  Another missed event.   Monday,  24th January, 2022, being the third Monday of January, under normal circumstances was going to be once again, the WRMC Restaurant Awards day, in which event we had welcomed over three hundred guests from the top restaurants and  hotels in Malta and Gozo,  year-in-year-out. WRMC News. The WRMC and the WRMC Restaurants Quality Recognition Awards were created in 2012 to celebrate restaurants as a culture, to be considered in the same way as the film, art and music industries. Relevant categories are judged assessed and reviewed in an attempt to better reflect the true range and diversity of the Malta restaurant scene: from fine dining innovators to humble establishments; around Malta and Gozo. This Facebook Group has well over 21,200 registered members all of whom can participate in the Group’s open forum; to post and publish their own, direct and very recent restaurant experiences; as well as to comment, once again through their own, direct and recent experiences, on posts and reviews posted by Admin as well as other members. This participation and constant scrutiny of our own reviews help greatly to arrive at a fair and deservedly short-list of the top local restaurants in the various categories....

Fine dining -  Whither Thou Goest? It is no secret that fine dining restaurants are run on slim profits anywhere. These establishments are rarely considered to be cash-cows, and taking present economic trends, recession problems that have plagued the industry during the last four years,  huge set-up costs, staff-competence requirements and commensurate salaries, and general shifts in customer behaviour, mean that it is even harder than ever to make fine dining pay. That is of course, if one is going flat out, for this restaurant model and concept. There are many who think that they are operating a fine dining establishment, but once visited and reviewed,  most fall far short of this model. [caption id="attachment_2511" align="alignleft" width="150"] Fine-dining set-up[/caption]   Then again, are these establishments really sought after in Malta? There might be,  of course small cliques of possibly wealthier, older dine...

Aberdeen-Angus prime beef Is all beef that one finds at a butcher's shop or listed on a restaurant's menu as Angus beef, the same regardless as to which country it was imported from? Or regardless of what type of "feed" the herd was reared on? This is very far from the truth, so much so that a new DNA test has been developed to allow retailers to authenticate pure-bred Aberdeen-Angus beef, in a bid to protect its name and heritage, as distinct from beef simply labelled as just "Angus beef" or "Black Angus beef".   If you get a bright red chunk of beef, it may well look nice on a tray, but it certainly won't taste very well once cooked, eatable but not really very good. But if you get one with a little bit of white fat around it and speckles of marbling through it, it will cook and taste sublimely. Before one can cook a great steak, one has to buy a great steak, but many people don't know how to buy steak even when looki...
