SPAIN – The iconic wine of Spain.

Wine Feature. Spain – The third wine exporting country in the world Author:  Reno Spiteri – ACWP., CCTP., BBA (Project Management). Certified Wine Professional Certified Culinary Travel Professional Professional Member of the Society of Wine Educators (USA)   Spain is the third leading producer of wine in the world and trails only behind France and Italy. In 2016 Spain exported over $3 billion of wine all over the world. The Spanish produce some of the greatest red wine in the world, with various of their new, modern-style white wines receiving critical acclaim. Spain’s sparkling wines, known as Cava are second only to those of Champagne, and they also produce one of the world’s classic fortified wines viz: Sherry.   Having said this it would be logical to assume that the wines of Spain are as well-known as those of France and Italy, but surprisingly this is not the case.     W...

Scoglitti Restaurant, Valletta.

March 24, 2017

Scoglitti Restaurant – Valletta. Sunday lunch – 19th March, 2017.     Scoglitti Restaurant has been on the cards for a visit since it opened some three years ago. Situated in Boat Street, Valletta, underneath the bastions on the Marsamxett Harbour side, and directly facing Sliema across the harbour. Easy to be reached by ferry from Sliema as it stops directly alongside the restaurant a few metres away, as well as by car through Great Siege Road, Floriana or Marsamxett Road, Valletta. The restaurant is primarily a fresh fish and seafood establishment being owned by entrepreneurs in the fishing and fish trade, therefore fresh fish and seafood are never short or missing. This makes this place highly sought after by connoisseurs of Mediterranean and Sicilian cuisine. Exceptionally well-staffed by trained serving staff, led and supervised by Floren Sultana, the restaurant manager/owner, service was efficient a...

Capo Crudo Restaurant – Marsamxett, Valletta. Dinner – Friday, 17th February, 2017. It has been long in coming, but now that Capo Crudo Restaurant in Boat Street, Valletta, has been officially launched about a week ago, it has taken Valletta’s fine dining scene by storm. Fully booked day-in day out, in the few days that it has been operating, this restaurant has already attracted the attention of a large number of fine dining clientele. Operated on the ground by Chef-Director Marvin Schembri and director Keith Seychell the place is bound to be a success throughout. A good kitchen team under the direction of Marvin Schembri with Sous Chefs Robert Saccasan and Patrizio Cassar is in place as well as a very good service team and sommelier service. The restaurant is divided in open plan sections where on entering one enters the cocktail bar and lounge, from which one moves to the main restaurant; on one side the open kitchen is ...

July: Dinner at Tartarun Restaurant – Marsaxlokk. Saturday, 30th July, 2016. Tartarun Restaurant is one of our regular dining-out establishments, and one which has since opening up some years ago under this name , established itself as one of the leading fish and seafood restaurants in Malta. Family run by the Schiavone family, with all members playing an active part in its operation, although sometimes James the Executive Chef, and Stephen the Restaurant/s Manager having to play double roles to run both Tartarun at Marsaxlokk as well as Wejla at Smart City. The main requirement to be able to do this successfully, is to have two excellent teams both in the kitchen as well as front-of-house  which can be deployed in either restaurant as the need would arise. On our visit last Saturday, Stephen was running front-of-house, and the kitchen was in the hands of Chef Daniel Saliba. Both performed admirably in a somewhat de...

Sotto Mare Ristorante – Marsaxlokk

May 10, 2016

Gourmet degustation dinner at:  Ristorante Sotto Mare – Marsaxlokk. Friday, 8th April, 2016. Over the last months, we have attended and participated as normal guests,  in a number of gourmet, exhibition degustation dinners such as:  that organized for the Gout de France;  wine-food pairing dinners at various restaurants; as well as for the launching of new menus; new items; experimental dishes and so forth, created by different Chefs. One observation that I have made is, that over the last one or two years or so, fine dining has evolved and developed to very high levels by a few top chefs in Malta, in various locations, and not restricted to the odd, one or two places. Gone are the days, that to experience top class presentations and exquisite food preparations, one had to go overseas, with all the hassle and expense that that might entail.   Fine dining as we know it, has now moved to a few, establishments around Malta at whic...
